Leona Lodge Rededication |
On June 2, at 10 a.m., Leona Lodge was the place to experience the Oakland Spirit. Over a hundred people attended the festive event celebrating the rededication and completion of Leona Lodge. Leona Lodge was built in 1959-60 and has since been a unique architectural part of the city's heritage. As a joint venture, the City and Redwood Club sponsor Scout Troop 339 there. The Lodge is also a regular site for wedding receptions and parties. City officials attending the celebration included Councilmember Desley Brooks, Director of Parks and Recreation Audrey Jones-Taylor, M.C. Gale McMillon, and a score of others who make the Parks and Recreation department a special organization. Oakland Community Orchestra capped the event with music. Board members of the Redwood Club Jack Wynton, Marje and Gordon Laverty, Larry Laverty and neighbors completed the crowd. Desley Brooks described the interim renewal project, including the new woodwork and the new heat-saving mainflow section windows. This was made possible by a grant from PG&E. New light fixtures added to the aesthetic of the room. We can all be proud of what Oakland Parks and Recreation and city leaders have achieved in the grand improvement of Leona Lodge.
